Diabetic Foot Health
Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill- The Therapeutic Shoe Bill as a provision of Medicare (Part B), offers to diabetic patients coverage for therapeutic footwear and shoe inserts. Protective footwear can help prevent skin breakdown that may lead to foot ulcers, infection or amputation.Diabetes, Neuropathy & Poor Circulation- Diabetes is a serious disease that can develop from lack of insulin production in the body or due to the inability of the body's insulin to perform its normal functions. Of the 18.2 million Americans with diabetes, it has been estimated that 25% will develop foot problems related to the disease. Diabetes is the most frequent cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations.
Peripheral neuropathy is described as a loss of sensation in the feet, which can lead to minor cuts, scrapes, blisters or pressure sores. If these minor injuries are left untreated, complications may result which could lead to ulceration, skin break down and possibly amputation. The risk of a leg amputation is 15-40 times greater for a person with diabetes. Each year, 82,000 people lose their foot or leg to diabetes.
Poor circulation can contribute to foot problems by reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrition supplied to the foot. This can lead to slow healing or injuries resulting in foot ulcers, skin breakdown or infection. Poor circulation and peripheral neuropathy can contribute to poor foot health in diabetics.
What does Medicare Cover?- Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill provides one pair of off-the-shelf depth shoes and up to three pairs of heat moldable inserts within a calendar year. This coverage is limited to shoes and inserts meeting certain requirements for patients with specific clinical conditions.
